This Maryland Candidate for Governor Honored Breastfeeding in Her Campaign Ad
Krish Vignarajah is a mom, a woman, and she knows how to multitask. Oh, and did we mention she wants to be Maryland's next governor, too?
In her latest campaign ad, the mother of 9-month-old Alana, breastfeeds her daughter throughout the majority of the 30-second video while speaking about her goals as a candidate for her home state. Vignarajah is running in the 2019 gubernatorial primary election in Maryland with the hopes of becoming the Democrat candidate for governor. But here's the kicker — she's the only woman running in the raceandif she won, she says she would be the only female in the Maryland government.
"There are no women in statewide or federal office in Maryland. None,” she explains in her video. “This isn’t just about representation, it’s about policy. States with women in government have better schools, better health care, lower incarceration rates. I want all of that for Maryland.”
Moms and women across the U.S. are all for Vignarajah's message, too. She's had tons of positive Twitter responses to her video and questions on how they can support her campaign (even without being residents of Maryland).
This is an absolutely fantastic ad. Having more capable and dedicated women such as Krish in power will only make our country better. She's the best candidate by a landslide.— Kerry McCracken (@kerry_mccracken) March 21, 2019
Yes! This ad is great! I'm tired of having people shame women for doing what is natural and wholesome! @KrishForMD krishfothank you for running! Good luck.— 🦅 I vote! ⏰ ErciTall 🍻🌊 (@ercitall) March 21, 2019
But Vignarajah hasn't been the only political candidate to breastfeed their child in an ad. Wisconsin gubernatorial hopeful Kelda Roys breastfed her daughter in a campaign ad just earlier this month.
Breastfeeding is a natural thing to do, and we definitely need more women in office. So, keep doing you, ladies.
"Some say no man can beat Larry Hogan," Vignarajah says while breastfeeding. "Well, I'm no man. I'm a mom. I'm a woman.
